New Grants Via Ready, Set, Achieve!
Thursday, 22 August 2013 00:00
After three years of work in Westbury to improve school readiness, The Early Years Institute (EYI) has raised funds to support innovative organizations that help young children and their families get set up for school success. The Westbury Ready, Set, Achieve! Fund, funded in its inaugural year by the Rauch Foundation, is being created to help improve early learning opportunities for Westbury children up to age five. Grants will go to services that focus on improving child outcomes in key areas of school readiness: physical health and well-being, emotional maturity, social competence, language and cognitive development and/or communications skills and general knowledge.
The Ready, Set, Achieve! Fund will be co-chaired by Frank Frisone and Michelle Cacioppo from the Westbury/Carle Place Chamber of Commerce, and Marjorie Giordani from the New Cassel Business Association. An informational meeting on Monday, September 16 at 4:30 p.m. at the “Yes We Can” Community Center, at 141 Garden Street, will cover details and eligibility requirements. Applicants must be in operation for at least two years and in good financial standing. In addition, programs must be one of the following: nonprofit group; licensed/registered child care provider; religious organization; health organization; or schools serving preschoolers.

ABOUT: WESTBURY READY, SET, ACHIEVE! FUND
The Early Years Institute has been working with the Westbury Union Free Public School District and a Westbury Early Learning Leadership Team to assess school readiness of all Kindergartners in the district. The data are being used to create programs and services that will help prepare children for success in school and offer cost savings to the school district. The Westbury Ready, Set, Achieve! Fund is being created to improve early learning opportunities for all children 0-5 in Westbury so they are prepared for school and life. Grants will be dispersed from the Fund for activities in the community that help improve child outcomes in the five areas of school readiness as defined by research and the National Education Goals.
EYI is seeking to create a Ready, Set, Achieve! Fund Committee to review grant applications and make decisions. During the first year, this group will help create the policies that will govern the distribution of funds. This body will be asked to meet two or three times during the remainder of 2013 to develop and finalize the RFP as well as perform other administrative tasks required for the Fund’s implementation. In subsequent years, we hope that the RSA Fund Committee will help replenish the funds for future grants. Ideal members are business and civic leaders and others concerned about the future of the Westbury Community.
The Early Years Institute will provide initial staffing for this initiative, e.g. distributing and reviewing all proposals, presenting them for review and voting from the RSA Fund Committee and disbursing funds.
